Newton’s “Law of Inertia” states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.” Referring to this statement, an object requires the application of a certain amount of force in initiating change in movement or direction. The force should be directly proportional to the weight of the object. It implies that the heavier it is or the greater the pull of the Earth’s gravity on the object’s mass, the greater amount of force it entails to facilitate the movement.
The same theory applies to us human beings and the daily endeavors we intend to accomplish. Inertia in human lives may perhaps be directly or indirectly relative. People have a propensity to devote a great deal of effort in order to surmount the “human inertia” which points toward the attainment of their goals. All the same, there are further considerations that vary with the uniqueness of every person. One would be amount of time they intend to complete the objective and the other would be the level of excellence aimed upon completion of the objective. The fundamental concern would be the amount of effort exerted that influences the achievement of both. This is where the “Newton’s Law of Inertia” pulls in. To arrive at the desired result is not an overnight event. Every endeavor would command preparation, adaptation, mastery and consistency.
People may well spend half of their lifetime with a habit to break. Attempting to transform in an instant may be possible. However, difficulties may be experienced in doing so because of the length of time intended for the desired change is short. There are a lot of factors that affect the success of a habit change. One would be the time spent doing the old habit. How long has it been going on and how had it been affecting a persons biological systems. Secondly, how significant has the habit is to the person and how has it been benefiting him. Thirdly, how inclined is the individual towards the habit and how long will it take him to drop it off. Fourth, what is the very strong reason that instigates the need to change the habit. Fifth, how able is the individual to take the first step. Lastly, how committed is he to sustain the new lifestyle. Considering everything, it all boils down to the amount of motivation a person has in order to fulfill the change.
It is like trying to quit a vice due to health reasons or engaging into a life long commitment, it may fall short at times no matter how hard we try to make it consistent. Everybody must have had an experience like this once or more in their lifetime. Breaking a 10-year habit is difficult because it is easier to fall and immerse into it. It is because the momentum is set at a constant and is more too often effortless to give in. To try to suspend both arms in the air for days may require more effort than to just let your hands hang on both sides.
To instigate change in attitude, values and lifestyle, one must reflect on the magnitude of the habit. How has it really been affecting his / her life in terms of the “benefits” as well as the “disadvantages”. What is the reason for the need to change. As soon as the position is determined and the goal is established, then the course on the road to the endeavor becomes lucid.
In realizing concepts and achievement of objectives, time is of the essence. Furthermore, it is imperative to evaluate the significance and the benefit of the desired change aligned to the present situation. Providing all angles are settled, what guarantees the commitment to uphold the new habit? Everything is dynamic and would certainly adjust to suit the succession of individual priorities and the demands of the modern times.
To come to a resolve, a passionate commitment to the fundamental objective should be established and should always remain the focal point.
